| 0:00.0 | Hello and welcome to the Storygrid podcast. This is a show dedicated to helping you become a better |
| 0:05.9 | writer. I'm your host Tim Graal and I'm a struggling writer trying to figure out how to tell a story |
| 0:11.7 | that works. Joining me shortly is Sean Coyne. He is the creator of Story Grid, the author of the |
| 0:17.3 | book Story Grid and an editor with over 25 years experience. |
| 0:21.8 | In this episode, we finish up our discussion about publishing and we make a really |
| 0:26.0 | cool announcement about something that we're doing here at StoryGrid that you can be a part of. |
| 0:32.7 | So make sure you listen through this episode and then I will tell you more at the very end. |
| 0:39.0 | It's really exciting. So I hope you'll listen to the episodes. Stay on to the end. But let's jump |
| 0:44.3 | in and get started. So Sean, we've been talking about just publishing and the publishing |
| 0:51.0 | landscape and we spent a good amount of time last week talking about |
| 0:56.5 | basically if we could wave a magic wand and come up with the perfect publishing house |
| 1:03.4 | and we tried to do that with StoryGrid, what would it look like? |
| 1:06.5 | And you know, the first thing you talked about was focusing on the process not the results right and how |
| 1:14.1 | whether you're traditionally published or self published it's really focused on the results of like |
| 1:19.8 | okay we got to sell a bunch we got to make a bunch of money to pay everything back and even you know |
| 1:24.7 | you've talked about how you started a publishing house you know know, several years ago, and you had to get funding. And it was really expensive to start. And so, but if we're going to do things differently, it's really nice to say, okay, we're going to start a publishing house and we're going to be focused on the merits of the work and the process of the work, |
| 1:46.2 | but at the same time, publishing books cost money. So we obviously have to sell books or, you know, |
| 1:54.0 | we're not going to be able to be viable. And, you know, the way that you do that is by having |
| 2:00.4 | bestselling books. |
| 2:02.2 | So, which then gets us back into that same process of going after people that can do bestsellers |
| 2:08.7 | and thinking results oriented. |
| 2:10.9 | It's to me so easy to fall back into that paradigm because that's the world we live in. |
