Summary

You only have to look around the country right now to see the power state legislatures have over almost every part of our lives. While the 10th Amendment is a check on the power of the federal government, it gives state leadership an almost infinite amount of power, and in the wrong hands, this unchecked influence has been an absolute disaster for human rights, civil rights and democracy. For 40 years, while Republicans invested billions of dollars and focused energy into building and holding state governing majorities Democrats focused the majority of their attention and money on national races and, while it seemed like things were progressing around the country, individual states were actually putting the pieces in place for regressive laws that would take us back. This stops today. You wanna fight back? We do it at the state level and the States Project tells us how. Over the past 40 years, while Republicans invested billions of dollars and focused energy

attention and money on national races.

And while we've spent a gross amount of time focusing on the federal government, which of course

0:44.6

we need to do, we are now seeing that the people who have arguably more power over our daily lives

0:50.7

are the people who run our states, and more specifically our state legislatures.

0:56.0

If you listened to last week's pod, you know that the 10th amendment,

0:59.4

the final amendment of the Bill of Rights, says that if it's not listed in the Constitution

1:03.6

as a federal power, or if it's not something the Constitution explicitly says the states can't do,

1:09.1

then whatever it is is up to the states, which gives state leadership an almost infinite

1:14.8

amount of things they have control over.

1:17.2

So the Republicans, knowing they were losing the majority will of the people around the country,

1:22.0

and that their policies and positions were no longer popular, made the strategic choice,

1:26.8

along with their donors and backers, to target their attention on the states and the courts,

1:31.8

where they had a better chance of dictating their will onto the people without necessarily having

1:37.4

the majority support of those same people. You only have to look around the country right now
