They have served their time.

Paid their debts to society for their past actions.

Most of them have learned their lessons and rehabilitated themselves back into society.

Started businesses.

Created families of their own.

And became leaders in their communities.

0:32.7	I got a dog in this game, but I just want to put some things in perspective for you. Now, if a person is a rapist, a pedophile, a murderer, stabbed somebody, shot somebody,
0:44.3	vengeful, if somebody is a violent person, whether that's sexually or physically, yes,
0:50.7	we should strip them of their rights and they should be in prison.
0:54.7	But I've been in eight different prisons and 90% of the population were low-level drug criminals.
1:02.5	And what happens?
1:03.7	I'll use myself an example because I don't want to out anybody.
1:06.3	But at 19 years old, I got caught with some cocaine and I ended up going to prison for it. It wasn't
1:12.0	a lot. It was $300 worth of cocaine. I go to prison for it. I do two years in prison. I get out.
1:16.7	I've finished my parole successfully. In the state of Texas, you can own a gun in your home
1:21.4	after you've done your sentence and you can vote. Well, because I'm a felon, they assumed I was selling drugs when I built a business.
1:28.5	And they raided my home, did not find any drugs, but they found that gun and sent me back to prison.
1:33.5	That was exactly 20 years ago. It would be 20 years ago in July.
1:37.9	Since 2008, when I was released from federal prison, I haven't gotten a speeding ticket.
1:43.3	I haven't been in trouble. I haven't been to court. I run multiple businesses. I haven't gotten a speeding ticket. I haven't been in trouble. I haven't
1:44.6	been to court. I run multiple businesses. I haven't been sued. I have run an upstanding operation.
1:51.3	I have an outstanding family. I've even been able to adopt one of my sons all after being a
1:56.3	felon. Now think about this. The first time I got arrested and became a felon, do I think a felony for which carries five to 99 years for $300 worth of dope is a little excessive? Yes, but did I do that? Yes. The second time, I'm stripped of my rights and the only reason I go to prison is because of a prior conviction. So had the prior conviction. So now I'm in recidivism of going back
