There are around 50 cemeteries in Vienna.

Centri-Fridof, or the Vienna Central Cemetery, is the largest,

and I'll be saying it the English way,

because it is much easier for me. As a matter of fact, it's one of the largest cemeteries in all

of the world. There are hundreds of thousands buried here, and among those number are many

famous people, particularly musicians or composers. What really caught my eye about the cemetery

is that it has 330,000 graves, but 3 million interments. That is a lot of dead people in one location.

Humans have been in the area that is now home to Vienna since Neolithic times.

The Celtic settlement was founded here in 500 BC, and it was known as Vinduna, but by 15 BC, Rome would hold the area and rename it Vindabona.

Then would come the barbarians, Otto the Great, some dynasties, and Napoleon would seize it twice.

The city grew into a population of over one million people, and with that, they found a need for a

bigger cemetery. In 1874, on All Saints Day, the Central Cemetery was opened with 495

acres for burials. So, yes, a very large place.

The cemetery was built on the outskirts of the growing capital in a district called simmering.

The main gate was built by Mags Hegel in 1905 and is in the Art Nouveau style.

Up the main path, which is flanked by these glorious columns of trees,

one arrives at the church of St. Borromeo with its large dome, and it is gorgeous.

This church was also built by Hegel and was completed in 1910.
