Summary

Today I'm having a friendly discussion with Donald Robertson, author of the book "How to Think Like a Roman Emperor" and the new graphic novel "Verissimus" (illustrated by talented Portuguese artist Zé Nuno Fraga), about Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis, and all sorts of other things I didn't necessarily expect. Donald was traveling so the audio on his end is a bit poor, but the discussion, I hope, will more than make of up for it. Enjoy! On the new season of the divided dial from On the Media, we're exploring shortwave radio, where prayer and propaganda coexist with news and conspiracy theories, and where an existential battle for the public airwaves is playing out right now.

Hey there, welcome back to practical stoicism. I'm your host, Tanner Campbell, and in today's

0:41.9

episode, we're having a discussion with Donald Robertson. I caught up with Donald while he was

0:47.6

traveling. He's recently been to, geez, he's just all over the place. This guy is potentially one of

0:52.6

the coolest dudes that I've ever come across,

0:55.2

certainly within the realm of purveyors of stoicism. I mean, the guy has got things going on in

1:01.5

Greece. He's got things going on in Canada. He's got things going on in the UK. He's got a really

1:06.2

just wild background. And I think the reason that I appreciate him so much is that he reminds me,

1:13.7

this is going to sound a little self-serving, but he reminds me of myself, in that he was never

1:19.5

afraid at any point to shrug off what was traditionally expected of him or to stick with something

1:26.9

just because he had started

1:28.4

something, and maybe that sounds bad, but what I really mean is he wasn't afraid to break away

1:33.6

from something that was no longer serving him to chase something that was going to.

1:38.7

And as somebody who has worked as a marketer, owned a recording studio, become an audio engineer, become a consultant

1:46.1

to large business within media, and who recently broke away from all of that to become a

1:52.2

full-time podcaster in the philosophy space and writer in the philosophy space. It's just great

1:58.1

to know that I'm not the only psychopath out there who's willing to take those

2:01.4

kinds of risks. And I think that Donald is a great example of why taking risks and making difficult

2:08.8

decisions throughout the course of your life and kind of going where you think you need to go.

2:12.9

And of course, taking some good advice along the way is incredibly critical to becoming the sort of person
