Here's your closing bell brief for Friday, January 16th. I'm Catherine Sullivan for the Wall Street Journal.

U.S. stocks edged lower today. The Dow slipped two-tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ were

both down a tenth of a percent. However, the small-cap Russell 2000 index closed at a record for the third straight day.

President Trump said today he might want to keep National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett,

a top contender for the Federal Reserve chairman, in his current job.

Treasury yields climbed as the market weighed the next central bank leader.

Among individual companies, earnings and

clinical news drove significant price moves. Novo Nordisk shares rose 6.5% in Denmark today. The gain

followed news of positive uptake for the drug maker's new weight loss pill. Rival Eli Lilly

shares also advanced about half a percent. PNC Financial Services stock climbed

4 percent after reporting higher profit. The Pittsburgh Bank saw strong loan growth and increased

demand for financial services. Micron Technology shares jumped 8 percent during a broader

semiconductor rally. Investors responded to record quarterly results from a major

contract chipmaker. State Street stock dropped 6% after the company reported lower profit in the

fourth quarter, missing expectations. And J.B. Hunt Transport Services fell 1%. The logistics company
