Once again, I am Stephanie Ruhl. Thr to be back with you tonight for day 128 of the second Trump administration.

And what are we talking about tonight? Money, power, politics. As the whiplash over the president's tariff policy goes in one direction.

It keeps going on. The stock market rallied today after Trump announced

he's now delaying the deadline for trade talks with the European Union until July. This came

just two days after he threatened the region with a 50% tariff starting June 1st. Meanwhile,

after five months of declines, consumer confidence in May was stronger

than expected, in part due to the hope that Trump will not go through with these tariffs.

Here's what the White House National Economic Council Director had to say, if you were feeling

confused, maybe this will clear it up. Watch this.

Are you thinking eventually tariffs will get down to the level that businesses can negotiate within, 10% or less?

Or do you think that a lot of this is going to be paid by the American consumer, too?

Well, in the end, that's going to be up to the president.

But we've seen that 10 is a place that a lot of people have been pushed to.

And I would guess that if they come in with good enough offers,

then they'll stay there or perhaps even below.

But if they come in with retaliation and they don't open their markets to U.S. goods,
