Today, May 5, 2023, is National Missing Immurdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day.

The crisis of Missing Immurdered Indigenous People, or MIP, stems from generations of violence

and unfair government policies inflicted upon native people. In season 3 of Up and Vanished,

I covered the case of Ashley Loring Heavy Runner, a 20-year-old Indigenous woman who vanished

from the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. Since 2017, her case remains unsolved. In the overall

statistics surrounding MIP are just plain staggering. According to the US Department of Justice,

Indigenous women are murdered at a rate 10 times higher than the national average. In homicide

alone, is one of the leading causes of death for young Indigenous women. On this day, we acknowledge

this harm and lend our support to break down the systemic barriers enabling this crisis. Tinderfoot
