Head coach Aaron Glenn announced that he has fired

defensive coordinator Steve Wilkes with three weeks left in the season. This is going to create

the biggest test Aaron Glenn has faced so far in his brief tenure as Jets head coach. We'll talk

about that in a little bit, but first let's talk about the decision to fire Wilkes. It comes one day

after the Jets defense got absolutely shredded and an embarrassing loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And for once, the Jets actually listened to my advice because on our normal Monday show today,

I said that Steve Wilkes deserves to be on the hot seat.

His job should be on the line after that performance.

It was a dismal effort by the Jets.

And I think in situations like this, it's very easy to try and excuse a coach because we know that the Jets are short on talent right now. You know, they were starting Quantez Stiggers at Corner. Quante Stiggers is an excellent special team. Been one of the best special teamers the Jets have had all season long. And by the way, the Jets have the best special teams in the league. Stickers has a spot on the roster. At this point in his career, he's not a guy who can play corner effectively. And you look up and down the roster. Jets have issues. Jets have personnel issues. And they've only gotten greater since they traded their two best defensive players at the deadline. And they traded those players because the assets they received

for Sauce Gardner and Quinn and Williams could help this team get better going forward. For now,

though, they weakened what was already a pretty weak defense. And it's easy to look at this and say,

well, how would you expect Wilkes to succeed? But I think sometimes we look at these things too narrowly.

We look at a team that

lacks talent and we excuse coaches when things don't go that well. It's easy to say, well,

if Wilkes had better talent, the Jets defense would have more success. But my counter to that would

be if the Jets had more talent and more success, would that be because the coaching is better?
