If I had to put two fingers on what has mostly changed, it's the price of real estate,

We live in a society which has largely betrayed its young people by making the price of a public

education, not much less a private education, prohibitive, except for the wealthy. Everybody

else has to go into debt. And when I went to the University of California between 1970 and 1974, I still remember

what they charged. I did not come from a wealthy family. I was not a trust fund baby. My folks had to

work for a living. My grandfather sewed women dresses in sweatshops in New York City, became an

organizer for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union. And my parents did not have the means to put me through school or pay for it.

But I remember what was called then registration fees at the University of California, Berkeley.

It wasn't even called tuition.

And I remember what it was.

It was excluding dormitory and the cost of books, $848 a year. Even accounting for the inflation over the last

half century, $848 was within reach of middle class and even working class families in the state

of California. When the late David Lance Boynes, who was one of the eight students arrested in

1964, Manning Hard Tables and Distributing Political Literature, and he was arrested in which touched off the free speech movement.
