Dog has been rescued after being swept off rocks on the New South Wales Far South Coast.

The canine swam 800 meters to safety on a nearby island before being rescued.

800 meters, how far is that?

About 2,500 yards or so, which is over a mile.

Really?

Yeah.

Rangers are now looking for the dog's owner.

The large brown and white pooch was found on Snapper Island.

Volunteers from the local Marine rescue were alerted to the dog in danger around noon.

Received two phone calls, one from a number of the public at observation point.

The other from national parks.

They said there was a dog that had been washed off into the water and was swimming out in the

middle of the ocean, about 20 or 200 to 300 meters offshore at that point.

So they assembled a rescue team. The effort included the rescue vessel Bateman's Bay,

which was tasked with investigating the incident.

Then they also had a rescue jet ski, capable of accessing the shoreline.

Coles also put out to private vessels in the area. Keep an eye out for a swimming dog in distress.

When the crews arrive, the dog had swum all the way out to Snapper Island.

It would have been a fair swim out there.

The dog was swimming around for about 20 minutes to a half an hour before it made it to shore.

Two volunteers on jet skis when ashore tried to encourage the dog to safety, but it took a little time.
