Steve Magness is a runner, coach, exercise physiologist, and a writer. He’s the author of The Science of Running and is the current cross country coach at the University of Houston. He also coaches professional runners who compete in World Championships and the Olympics. He runs the website scienceofrunning.com.

So if I have this fear again we talked about fear of failure if I have this fear of

stressful activities of of anxiety etc then it's going to be debilitative.

Like my hormonal profile will shift in a negative direction, right?

And why does that happen?

Your mind is pretty smart thing.

Your brain is a pretty remarkable thing it thinks okay like I'm getting anxious

like I'm about to be in a bad spot I got to prepare for this right so it's the

mindset but on the other hand, if you see stress as a way to grow, as a way that your body is preparing to perform.

And what happens is, yeah, you're still got a little bit of that anxiety and

anxiousness, but what happens is it becomes positive.

An example I always like to give in an athletic standpoint

is think about the best performances.

Like you don't see them at practice right you don't see records being

broken you know when you're doing nothing and it's just you and your coach at

practice you see them during the big competitions the big games when people step up.

And the reason people are able to step up is because that

that stress gives you an extra boost in performance if it lets you do it.
