Writer producer Stephen Falk thought he'd gotten his big break in 2012 when NBC picked up his comedy series Next Caller.

He moved clear across the country to run the show, but after he'd shot just four episodes,

the Peacock suddenly pulled the plug without ever airing it at all.

So it was out of that frustration at really, really trying to be accommodating, and it's still getting

that I just said, all right, if I'm next thing I'm going to do, I'm just going to write what I want.

That next thing was the boozy black comedy, You're the Worst, which just wrapped its fifth

and final season on FXX.

Falk talks to the Hollywood reporter's Leslie Goldberg about going from writing TV recaps to

actual TV and the hard road to making You're the Worst, which critics actually concur,

is the best.

He also weighs in on how Disney's acquisition

of Fox could change television and the battle between the Writers Guild and the agencies. But first on
