There's a famous William Goldman essay about the movie Save Him Private Ryan.

As anyone who's seen the movie might recall, it opens with a visceral opening scene of Allied soldiers storming Omaha Beach on D-Day.

The film then cuts to an old man and a cemetery in France, commemorating his lost banner brothers.

Director Steven Spielberg slowly zooms the camera into a close-up of the man's weeping eyes,

followed by a flashback to World War II, and how these soldiers storming the beach,

Save's Private Ryan, played by Matt Damon, who is behind enemy lines.

One by one, throughout the movie, the soldiers die, leaving only Matt Damon's Private Ryan.

And then, according to Goldman, now the morphing shot comes, and I'm looking at the old face of Matt Damon at the cemetery.

Well, you can't do that. Don't you see? He wasn't bleeping there.

He knew nothing of the attack on the beach, knew nothing of the odyssey that followed,

and he never had a chance to hear about it. The only spare moment he had was when he was telling us all about his brothers and the ugly girl and setting the barn on fire.

Now, many in regards to Save and Private Ryan is one of the greatest world movies of all time.

And yet, as Goldman notes, there's a cheat-nets-framing device.

The opening sequence is meant to make us feel like we're on Omaha Beach ourselves,

and yet we're seeing it through the eyes of a man who wasn't even there.
