You might have heard of an effect known as the Strisand effect.

It describes how an attempt to censor information often has the unintended consequence of bringing

it to everyone's attention.

This clip from its history explains how the name of this effect has come to be associated

with Barbara Strisand.

In 2003, photographer Kenneth Edelman took 12,000 photos of the California coastline to

help document coastal erosion, right?

One of those photos, one, was of Barbara Strisand's Malibu Mansion.

Well, Strisand sued unsuccessfully to have the photo removed from the public collection,

the effect was simple.

Before the lawsuit, the photo had been downloaded six times, two of those by Strisand's attorney.

In the first month, after the lawsuit, the photo was downloaded nearly half a million times.

It didn't really work out the way Barbara planned.

In this episode, I'd like to propose a second inverse effect, the Strahan effect.
