This is the Cato Daily Podcast for Monday, December 17th, 2007. I'm Caleb Brown.

0:12.4

A new study by the Fiscal Policy Institute shows that immigrants,

0:15.6

legal and otherwise, make a surprisingly large contribution to the economy of New York.

0:21.2

How large a contribution? More than the gross products of 30 U.S.

0:25.4

States. Dan Griswold, the Cato Institute's Director of Trade Policy Studies, offers

0:30.2

past, going back 10 years to the National Academy of Sciences

1:34.1

and the research up until now. This shows consistently that immigrants are

1:40.1

contributing to our economy both on the low end in terms of filling jobs that Americans

1:45.7

are increasingly not interested in in lower paying service sector jobs, but on the higher

1:51.2

end in terms of doctors,

1:53.3

in terms of corporate CEOs, college professors,

1:58.0

it's just a very, I think, encouraging positive snapshot
