And one of the reasons I find it interesting is that you apparently have never seen it before.

But I was watching it fresh for the first time in preparation for this episode.

At least that's what my addled memory is telling me.

So yes, as always, spoilers ahead.

This is Dagger of the Mind from Midway through Season 1, written by S. Bar David and directed by Vincent

McAvety. In this episode, the Enterprise is inexplicably acting as a cargo vessel for some reason,

tasked with transporting gigantic containers of drugs to the Tantalus 5 penal colony, and then

accepting a box of alleged supplies for the Bureau of Penology back on

Earth. Turns out, no supplies in the box, just Dr. Simon Van Gelder, who initially appears to be

an escaped convict. Van Gelder is suffering from the consequences of a rehabilitation device

called a neural

neutralizer, causing him to suffer from space madness.

While Van Gelder is restrained in sick bay, Kirk and ship psychologist Dr. Helen

Noel beamed down to the penal colony to investigate.

While there, Kirk notices that some of the residents appear to be glazed over emotionless

zombies. Dr. Tristan Adams reveals his neural neutralizer device while it's being used on one of his

patients. Later, Kirk decides to try the neural neutralizer on himself but is caught in the act.
