About the Speaker:


George Corbett is Professor of Theology, School of Divinity, University of St Andrews. Prior to joining the School of Divinity in 2015, he held positions as Junior Research Fellow in Philosophy, Trinity College, and Affiliated Lecturer, University of Cambridge, where he taught English literature, Italian literature, and theology. He received his BA (double first), MPhil (distinction), and PhD (AHRC-funded) from the University of Cambridge. He also studied in Pisa (as an Erasmus-Socrates exchange scholar at La Scuola Normale Superiore), Rome (Institutum Pontificium Alterioris Latinitatis), and Montella (Vivarium Novum).


Prof. Corbett directs CEPHAS (a Thomistic Centre for Philosophy and Scholastic Theology), TheoArtistry (a project linking up theologians and artists), and co-directs the collaborative MLitt in Sacred Music.

while 2023 marked the 700th anniversary of St. Thomas Aquinas' canonisation in 1323.

This year, 2024, marks the 750th anniversary of his death.

This is then a double jubilee and a double opportunity to reflect on St. Thomas as not just a great teacher of truth and goodness from whom we can learn so much,

but as a saint whose example of goodness, of virtue and holiness we are invited to follow.

So as in my first talk, I gave seven reflections on Aquinas' ethics,

on a domestic approach to the good life.

So in this second talk, I'm going to structure my talk similarly

by offering seven reflections on St. Thomas's life

and how he can become, especially for our students,

both our patron saint interceding for us and our exemplary model of holiness.

So first, I'm going to speak about St. Thomas as our patron saint and intercessor in heaven

Second, about the highest faculties of St. Thomas's soul, his miraculous intellect, and even more striking, I would say, is indomitable will.
