You might know the company's Square because your barista used it on a mobile device to swipe your credit card last time you bought a latte, but Square also has one of the most popular

peer-to-peer payment apps, appropriately called Cash.

It lets friends or family transfer money to each other from their phones, like PayPal or Venmo.

You can also use it to pay for goods and services.

Millions of people, many of whom don't have a traditional bank account, use it every month.

And that's been great for Square, which says it's sitting on $200 million of deposits.

What to do with all that dough?

Well, if Square were a bank,

it might let you earn interest on the cash in your account. If it were a brokerage, it would let you buy stock. It is, of course, neither, at least for now. But it might soon be.
