April is Autism Awareness Month and Hilaria and Daphne are joined by Chief Science Office at Autism Speaks, Dr. Thomas Frazier, PhD. He is responsible for the science portfolio, including grant-making, the MSSNG genomic research project and the Autism Treatment Network. As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Frazier has been involved for 11 years in evaluation, treatment and research focused on individuals with autism. Prior to joining Autism Speaks, he was the director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Autism and an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. He is a dad of 2 beautiful children one of which has Autism and intellectual disabilities.
Over the past decade, Dr. Frazier has published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and done numerous conference presentations. His research has focused on improving autism identification; developing and studying new treatment approaches; creating and refining measures for tracking autism symptoms and quality of life in individuals and families affected by autism; and translational studies of a genetic sub-group of individuals with autism and phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) mutations.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.
Together, Dr. Frazier, Hilaria and Daphne discuss the signs to be aware of when looking at children who might have autism and things parents can do with their kids to test at home. Plus, raising awareness about autism and the many resources out there to help families with children on the autism spectrum at autismspeaks.org.
