Summary

In our previous episode, we shared a presentation Tristan and Aza recently delivered to a group of influential technologists about the race happening in AI. In that talk, they introduced the Three Rules of Humane Technology. In this Spotlight episode, we’re taking a moment to explore these three rules more deeply in order to clarify what it means to be a responsible technologist in the age of AI.

0:07.8	So in our last episode, we shared a presentation Tristan and I gave recently to a group of influential
0:12.9	technologists and media folks in San Francisco about the race happening in AI.
0:20.0	And at the beginning of that presentation, we talked about three rules for technology
0:24.3	or laws and technology that Tristan, you and I have been brainstorming about.
0:29.1	And we wanted to pause in this episode and just explore those three rules more deeply
0:35.4	because Tristan and I have been thinking about how to describe how technology is used
0:41.4	beyond the intent of the creator, but then gets picked up by a larger economic system and
0:46.2	often used for really bad things.
0:49.5	I think what we really wanted to do was just kind of boil down and simplify.
0:53.0	What does it mean to be a responsible technologist?
0:55.9	Because there are these larger forces that are going to take the technology that you put
0:58.7	into the world and whisk them into all these impacts that you didn't attend.
1:02.8	And so what are three simple rules that we can follow as technologists to create a more
1:06.4	humane future?
1:08.1	So rule one, when you invent a new technology, you uncover a new class of responsibilities.
1:14.2	And it's not always obvious what those responsibilities are.
1:17.4	Rule two, if that invention, if that new tech confers power, it will start a race.
1:23.0	And rule three, if you do not coordinate, that race will end in tragedy.
1:27.4	So let's walk through these rules.
1:29.6	And I'm going to illustrate with a very personal example.
1:33.2	So my personal example is that in 2006, I invented Infinite Scroll.
