Hollywood. Hollywood is known for its movie stars.

Chicago and New York have gangsters, and way down south in New Orleans, they have Voodoo Kings and Voodoo Queens.

Voodoo has been deeply rooted in Louisiana since the

1700s, brought over by enslaved Africans who mix their spiritual traditions with Catholicism.

It wasn't about curses and dolls with button eyes that you stick pins into.

It was about protection, healing, and community. Voodoo is monotheistic,

meaning followers worship one god. Not chickens or goats or other rumors you may have heard,

not hundreds of gods, but one god with many spirits, thousands even.

Those spirits are known as Loaz.

Voodoo comes from the word Voodot, a traditional Afro-Hatian religion.

Voodo represents a syncretism of the Western African Vodon religion and Roman Catholicism by the decedents of the Congo,

Yoruba, and Dahoming, who have been enslaved and transported to colonial Saint Domingo,

which is Haiti, and partly Christianized by Roman Catholic missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The word voodot means spirit or deity.

There is also Poodoo, a system of folk magic marked by its syncratic nature,

and known for its Greek rGree bags and elaborate rituals.

It was invented by enslaved African Americans, and it's pretty powerful.
