It's the morning of June 14, 1973, in Washington, D.C.

Vice President Spiro Agnew steps into the Oval Office of the White House and greets President

Richard Nixon, who's standing alongside his chief of staff. Agnew begins the meeting with some

light pleasantries, praising Nixon for the speech he gave the night before and trying to lift the

President's spirits. But as always, Nixon's craggy features remain inscrutable. The man can be

impossible to read. But as the two grab a seat on a pair of mustard yellow couches, Agnew gets a

better sense of Nixon's mood. The President looks tired, worn thin, and at the end of his rope.

Everyone in the administration knows that Nixon has been under tremendous pressure.

Ever since a group of burglars were arrested breaking into democratic headquarters at the Watergate

Hotel, his administration has been in crisis. The break-in was just about a year ago, and at first,

the story seemed like it didn't have legs, just a small-scale crime committed by a group of men

with inexplicable motives. But in the time since, Watergate has turned into a full-blown scandal,

one that's begun hollowing out the administration. In recent weeks, several of Nixon's top

aides have resigned from office, and investigators have been increasingly circling the President himself,

finding links between the burglary and top officials at the White House.

So Agnew knows it's not a good time to ask the President for favors, but Agnew is dealing with

a brewing crisis of his own, one with the potential to end his service as Vice President.
