The topic today is spiritual vitality.

What is it?

And how do we maintain it?

We understand physical vitality as being healthy, strong, alert, energetic.

The word vitality comes from the Latin vita, which means life. We know that we must exercise

and eat right and get enough sleep if we want to increase or maintain our vitality, if we want to stay healthy and strong.

But meanwhile, gravity is working against us. We're getting older and weaker, no matter what we do

to fight against it. It is, after all, vanity, striving after the wind. Each of us will eventually

die. We can guilt ourselves into more exercise,

hoping to impress our friends by how fit we are, or to give our lives more purpose, or simply because

we enjoy it, no guilt. And of course, being physically fit is great. Nothing wrong with that. It's a positive

good, but we must not neglect

the more important spiritual vitality. How are you doing there? Are you feeling lethargic and

sluggish spiritually? Or are you thriving at the gym, but also thriving spiritually? Is all the

heavy lifting confined to the gym,

or are you increasing the weights you're lifting spiritually as well? The Bible has a lot to say

about this. 1. Timothy 4.8 says, for bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable

for all things, having promise of the life

that now is and of that which is to come. There it is. Godliness is profitable. That's spiritual
