Summary

This week on Unorthodox, an upcoming Oppenheimer simcha sparks a spirited debate. Our Jew of the Week is the one and only Letty Cottin Pogrebin—feminist icon, writer, activist and author of the new book Shanda: A Memoir of Shame and Secrecy. She tells us about her personal Jewish awakening, and about reckoning with her Jewish identity within the feminist movement. (If Cottin Pogrebin’s description of being excluded from the minyan at her mother’s shiva sounds familiar, here is her daughter Abigail Pogrebin sharing a similar story from Ruth Bader Ginsburg.) Across the JEW.S.A. is a new Unorthodox project that will showcase 12 of the most inspiring Jewish stories across the country. Nominate your hometown at tabletm.ag/acrossthejewsa. Across the JEW.S.A. was created with support from the Jewish Federations of North America. We’re heading back on the road! Find out about our upcoming events at tabletmag.com/unorthodoxlive. Hello, unorthodox, this is your friend Anne from Alcons Park calling and I just finished listening to the episode where Phil disclosed that he scooped his bagel.

0:12.0

So for a lot of years I've been scooping my bagel also, modestly to save the calories, but also acknowledging that it is a better ratio.

0:20.0

However, my uncle reminded me of the tradition in our family when we grew up and that was that my grandfather actually cut the bagels in thirds.

0:31.0

So I have gone back to that tradition and now not only do I have the right ratio and less bagel, I actually am not wasting as much food and I have more bagels to use in the future.

0:44.0

So here's an idea for Phil, thanks for all you do. I love your podcast, but you already knew that.

This is Unorthodox, the universe's leading Jewish podcast. I am your host, Mark Oppenheimer, joined as ever by my co-hosts, tablet deputy editor Stephanie Botnick.

Hello, and tablet editor at large, Leo Liebowitz, Alan Wasala, and it is bought midst of week at the Oppenheimer House. Clara becomes a Jewish woman, this Shabbat.

1:15.0

That's all you need for news, the Jews. Unorthodox is brought to you by tablet magazine on the web.

1:21.0

No, that's all you need to know in the Jewish sphere. Honestly, the jokes on you because this is kid three out of five. You're nowhere near out of the out of the woods with this one.

1:32.0

I do sometimes wonder, are they a little sick of us? Because we've had five either Simchat bots, like baby naming sprigdles or brisses, and now we're onto the Benay Mitzvah.

1:41.0

And I mean, I'm sure there are people in the pews who are like, good new, like enough already, enough already Oppenheimer. We'd like a Shabbat that's not about you.

1:48.0

No, they like the kiddish that's sponsored by the Oppenheimers. It's like they know that there's five of them coming up.

1:54.0

It's true, though, we're pretty cheap. I have to say, we don't get Yoshi, the caterer who does excellent work. And there have been several Benay Mitzvah lately catered by Yoshi.

2:04.0

Sorry, Yoshi.

2:05.0

Though, Leo, you said you're bringing a big bottle of something this Saturday, right?

2:09.0

I will upgrade this kiddish. I will take this kiddish to the next level.

2:14.0

We'll be so drunk that we can't even recognize the name of Clara when it just shouted out.

2:19.0

This is great because I feel like we have been part, I was at your son, David's Briss at Becky in New Haven.

2:26.0

Where it should be said, Josh Cross whipped out his recorder and got tape of the Briss, because I know we should get another one.

2:31.0

On a holiday. On Russia, on a day two.

2:33.0

Look, we can't control ourselves. Leo, I think you've been, you have a really strong track record.

2:38.0

Obviously, Mark, your family simخas are all about us. Leo, what's your track record?
