you to think about what it means to you right now today before I tell you

what it used to mean. The word is spinster. What do you picture? Probably an older woman alone,

maybe a couple of cats, the implication being that she missed the boat on marriage somehow.

It's not exactly a flattering image, right?

In fact, the Oxford American Dictionary officially tags it as derogatory.

It's been an insult for so long that most of us have forgotten that it was ever anything else.

But here's the thing.

Before it was an insult, before it was even a marital status, spinster was a job title. A spinster was a woman who spun thread. That's it.

That's the whole word. Spin plus the old English feminine suffix stir, which was specifically the female equivalent of her.

So you had a baker, a butcher, a weaver, those were male job titles.

And then you had a spinster.

Same structure, just the female version.

It shows up in legal documents in the mid-1300s.
