Hello everyone welcome to this week's edition of the History of the World

podcast we've got a special episode this week commissioned by Nick Barksdale

the Study of Antiquity and the Middle Ages YouTube Channel owner, who has

asked for an episode about the Mississippi culture. Oh, The Mississippian culture is a culture suggested to have existed from around the year

800 through to the European colonization of North America.

We need to be very careful though.

When discussing the cultures of Europe and Asia, we have this lovely convenient progression from Neolithic

societies through to the introduction of writing or indeed other cultures who could

write and some very definite identifications of cultures who would either develop

a more modern way of life or become exposed to more modern ways of life in a way that can be tracked.

In the cases where we have little direct evidence

there are often clues left to us by ancient explorers and scribes whose discoveries can be deciphered and compared allowing historians

to construct a likely story. In the case of the Americas we have a sudden leap forward from a very

Neolithic and nomadic way of life to a very immediate introduction of

Renaissance European culture.

This brought with it a desire to laserly label Native Americans as a backward society

of the Americas whose lands were simply fair game

until more modern historians had a desire

to understand and respect these cultures.
