tell me a little bit about you, how you got into academia? I'm not even sure I remember anymore.

I've been a professor for an awful long time. I'm a professor of communication and rhetorical

studies at Syracuse University. I've been on the faculty here for 23 years, previously taught at the

University of Central Missouri for a few years. So it's been a little while. I am first-generation

college, so this is kind of a new thing for my family. I grew up in Texas. Studying communication

and culture was just a fascinating way of trying to understand how people sort of make sense of the world.
