This is the sound of steel.

To be specific, it's the sound of steel being born, cast, made.

It's a sound which has struck in Britain in one form or another for centuries.

In not too long from now, in Port Talbot in South Wales, that sound will be gone.

Port Torbett is Britain's last great steelworks. Later this year, that sound will be gone.

Later this year, it's due to be closed, at least for a while.

Either way, steelmaking, as it has been done for generations, will be gone.

Could be devastating for this community.

Steel, the metal, from which it is made. But the Port Talbot story is a bigger one.

It's a story about long-term de-industrialisation of half a century's standing from which this region

is still reeling. It's about communities and stories which do not penetrate the thick and tall walls

of the Westminster conversation. And it's about the potential

political dangers of something which must be done, decarbonisation, which could yield a new round

of deindustrialisation again if it's not done right. Port Talbot is a taste of a possible

politics which may be closer than we think.

So in this special episode, we're in South Wales to tell the story of this works

and why its tale might mean something for the rest of us.
