Every day, it's 90 degrees here today today and it was 100 in the weekend.

I run every day.

What got you into that?

When I was 7 to 11 years old, I was a speed skater in Winnetka, Glenco, Illinois, which is where I was raised.

It's a little town right on Lake Michigan.

And about 20 miles north of Chicago.

And I used to go around, you're skating your age group, you know.

And I skated the silver skates in, let's see, in 1942, 3, 4, and 5.

And then when I turned 11,

I got a little bored with ice skating

because I didn't have a real coach.

I just did it myself, and I was good at it.

I was in the top three in North America

in my age group.

But I started running. I had to go to a camp and at the camp we had to take portages

with goddamn canoes every place we went. And we went on, you know, 20-day trips and so

and so on. And one time they got to a portage and they didn't know how far it was the other side.

So they sent me ahead to run across and then turn around and run back and time me, figuring

that's how long the portage would be.

And so I did that and that was the first time that I started running

and never ran long distance after that until in the early 60s.
