I recently got a chance to sit down with John Foreman, the lead singer of the band, Switchfoot, and they've got a new CD out called Where the Light Shines Through. It's so good, by the way.

And as we were talking

about the themes of the songs and stuff, had a lot of other things to discuss about God and life

and healing. And we talked for so long, actually, that we decided to split this up into two parts.

And I hope you enjoy this. I'd love talking to John. You are really prolific.

You get a lot of stuff done. I admire that. I don't know how you do it. I love writing songs,

and songs are, for me, a vehicle to understand the world. And so you're processing when you're

writing a song. Songs come to me.

Like, it's kind of a gift and a curse,

because I honestly don't know what to do with them when they come.

And they just come.

And then the problem is like, well, what do you do with it?

You know, like I got...

We wrote like 100 plus songs for this record.

Huh.

Which sounds like a real great thing, but it's actually a

problem because no one's going to hear 80 of them, you know? But for me, it's still driven

by this love. Like I thoroughly enjoy wrestling with the world in a song. And the rule for the

record was, if you're not willing to get in a fist fight And the rule for the record was,

if you're not willing to get in a fist fight for that song,

then it shouldn't be on the album. I wanted to ask you about that.
