Summary

Hospitals aren’t usually known for comfort — but could bringing nature inside actually help us heal faster? Public health expert Dr. Jay Maddock joins The Excerpt’s Dana Taylor to explain how biophilic design — from leafy views to nature sounds — is changing the way we think about patient recovery, burnout, and even the immune system. From fake plants to rooftop gardens, it turns out a dose of greenery might be just what the doctor ordered.

Hello, I'm Dana Taylor, and this is a special episode of USA Today's The Excert.

0:17.5

When we think about health care, we tend to focus on the medicine, the machines, the doctors,

0:22.7

but what if the design of a hospital room could play just as big a role in how we heal?

0:27.8

There's a growing body of research showing that our physical surroundings,

0:31.6

especially those that connect us to nature, can have a significant impact on patient outcomes.

0:37.2

The concept is called biophilic design,

0:40.3

bringing elements of the natural world into built spaces. In hospitals, it turns out, are

0:45.6

0:51.6

and faster recovery? Here to explore this idea with us is Dr. J. Maddock, a professor

0:57.7

of public health at Texas A&M University, and a leading expert on how our environments shape

our physical and mental well-being. Dr. Maddoch, thanks for joining me today.

1:08.4

I'm thanks, and happy to be here. Hospital environments are often cold, sterile, and high stress.

1:13.6

What kinds of environmental cues seem to make the biggest difference in improving a patient's

1:19.6

mental or emotional state, which of course will contribute to a faster healing timeline?

1:24.6

Yeah, that's a great question.

1:26.6

Since the 80s, we've actually seen research that the view out the window probably makes

1:30.8

the biggest amount of difference.

1:32.4

The earliest study looked at people with a view of a park-like setting compared to a view

1:36.0

of another building.

1:37.6

And they found that people with the view of the park-like setting got out of the hospital faster,

1:41.7

used less painkillers, and had less post-op complications.

1:45.0

And so just that view seems to make a huge difference.
