Today we are taking a break from our regularly scheduled programming for a special guest episode.

This will be the third episode in a series where we compare and

contrast certain aspects of Greece with Rome. The previous two episodes

featured classicists and fellow podcasters, Avon McMasterMaster to discuss Roman sexuality and Pita Greenfield to discuss the role of women in the religious sphere of Rome.

Today we bring on Pita's other half from the partial historians

Fiona Radford aka Dr Radness to discuss the role of slavery in ancient Rome.

We also talk quite a bit about gladiators and slave revolts, which gives Siano quite a bit of leeway to dive deeper into her favorite leading man from ancient Rome, Spartacus.

That is because Dr Radford is an expert on Rome in film and in particular she wrote her thesis on Kubrick

Sparticus.

Today we're going to talk about slavery in the Roman and Greek world

and compare and contrast them. So first I want to start out by asking about

Roman slaves how were they acquired in what ways were they acquired in Rome specifically?

And then I'll talk about Greece

and we'll see how they differ.

Sounds good.

I think there are some real similarities.

And definitely for the Romans, they come from a variety of sources.

I think the main one though which I'm sure Greece has in common is that they're often captured prisoners of war.
