Summary

This very special episode is brought to you in paid partnership with Cancer Research UK.

At the end of last year, myself, Richard Herring and Mark Steel sat down to have a frank, raw, funny and open conversation about something that has affected us all - cancer. We were later joined by Dr Sam Godfrey, the Science Engagement Lead at Cancer Research UK, who gave us invaluable insight into the incredible work Cancer Research UK are doing and why the future is looking bright.

Disclaimer for this one - very strong language and discussions of cancer diagnosis and treatment are used throughout. Disclaimer: CRUK can only accept donations from countries where we are a registered charity. Hello and welcome to the political party. Now this episode is a little bit different. It's brought to you in partnership with Cancer Research UK and the whole episode is about

0:21.2

cancer. But don't worry, we are seeing the lighter side of it, as well as exploring the very

0:26.4

serious side. But this is so much fun. Earlier this week, Cancer Research UK brought together me,

0:32.3

Richard Herring and Mark Steele, three comedians with a few things in common, including, most importantly, our shared

0:39.0

experience of having had cancer. And we had such a great fun chat about this. And we shared

0:45.2

stories about our initial diagnosis to the different treatments we needed and how that

0:49.7

affected us. And there are, as you would expect, so many funny moments along the way, and we are all

0:57.1

relishing each other's recovery. You will know Richard and Mark, of course. Richard is the host of

1:02.2

the Leicester Square Theatre podcast, a phenomenal comedian and prolific, one of my favourite

1:07.0

stand-ups to watch. He got testicular cancer and he wrote a book about it. Can I

1:11.2

have my ball back? Which was brilliant. He did a tour about the same name, which was superb.

1:15.7

And Mark Steele, you'll know, from so much of his work on Radio 4 in television, a phenomenal

1:20.7

satirical comedian, but a funny comedian anyway, even when he's not doing his fantastic satire.

1:26.1

He and I were diagnosed around the same time,

1:29.0

and we'd start to get to know each other a little bit more

1:30.9

by pure chance in the run-up to those diagnoses.

1:33.8

So we messaged each other a lot throughout,

1:36.4

and he really helped me, really helped me through that.

1:40.6

And I think at different times,

1:42.0

we probably thought the other one was worse off,

1:43.7

and in a way,

1:44.3

that kind of helped us. We're also joined by Dr. Sam Godfrey, who's the Science Engagement Lead
