Summary

Happy pride! Gather around, we've got a story to tell! For Stonewall weekend, a special treat: writer, critic, and journalist Cameron Cook joins Ben to talk about the one and only Liza through the stories of the bad (and good) gays in her life, from her father Vincente Minnelli to her first husband Peter Allen to her diabolical fourth husband David Gest. Liza learned on her (and our) mother Judy Garland's knee how to survive by appealing to gay guys. Gay guys used Judy, then Liza to self-fashion. None of it is particularly healthy, and yet we love it so. Our main source for this episode was Liza's new memoir, Kids, Wait Til You Hear This!, and Cameron's newsletter Cooked, with monthly essays and regular music playlists for pop culture obsessives, can be found here. 0:38.9

expression for today's episode, A Good Judy. So this episode, as you've already seen from the title,

0:45.1

was built around a slightly deranged concept, which is that we wanted to, I mean, it was mostly

0:52.3

the fact that Cameron and I wanted an excuse to sit down

0:55.0

and talk about Liza Minnelli's memoir, kids, wait until you hear this, which came out a couple

1:00.1

months ago. But it evolved into the idea that we were basically going to look at her life

1:05.9

through her relationships with these different kinds of gay men and kind of think about how Liza's bad

1:13.0

gays or were they bad, we're going to do our typical good bad thing for each one of them,

1:17.9

how they sort of shaped her, how they shaped her career, how they shaped this strange relationship

1:23.8

and I think this very self-conscious relationship that both Liza Minnelli and her mother

1:28.2

had with gay men. They really knew what they were doing. They did. I mean, she does. Liza's alive.

1:34.6

Yes. I hope it's a long time before she, as she says in the book, joins the celestial choir,

1:40.4

as she likes to call the afterlife, which who else could put it like that? I was talking about this earlier with you.

1:45.0

It's does she, is she aware of how her life has been impacted by these men?
