Welcome to Prognosis. I'm Laura Carlson. It's day 242 since coronavirus was declared a global pandemic.

Today, we have a special extended edition of the show.

The coronavirus is on a rampage around the world.

The view from Europe is especially alarming, with the surge in cases and deaths to levels not seen since last spring.

And now the U.S. is entering its most dangerous period for the virus yet.

Case rates are breaking records every day.

Hospitalizations have reached a level never seen before, and more than 10 million people have been infected.

Eight months into the pandemic, we are looking back at how exactly we got here.
