Senate impeachment trial against President Trump that starts next week. We'll discuss the

arguments we'll likely hear from both sides, how the Constitution and our nation's history

come into play, and what the senators who are acting as the jury will likely be keeping

in mind as they cast their votes. Our guest today is Jamil Jaffer. He has served as Chief

Council and Senior Advisor to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and as Associate White

House Council to former President George W. Bush. He's currently Executive Director

of the National Security Institute and an Assistant Professor of Law at George Mason University.

Hi, Jamil. Thanks for coming on The Newsworthy. Thanks for having me.

All right. So first, let's lay out the situation. Earlier this week, we got a preview of the arguments

from both House Democrats who are arguing for conviction, obviously, and Trump's lawyers

who are defending him. So what are the main points from both sides that stood out most

to you and that will likely play the biggest role in this trial next week?

Sure. So there's a lot of issues around the events of January 6th, the so-called insurrection day.

What the House has claimed in their articles of impeachment that they passed is that the

president engaged in behavior that constitutes high crimes and misdemeanors under the U.S. Constitution.
