Summary

Ryan is live at the AGU Fall Meeting and people agree to talk to him.

00:00:00 - First, we chat Martín S Hoecker-Martínez about his philosophy of outreach and his work studying the carbon fluxing of the ocean around Antarctica with ORCAS (acronym, not the animal). Be sure to follow him on Twitter (@msmithma) and learn more with these helpful links:

00:38:44 - In between segments we drink, but it's early so have some Holler Mountain coffee from Stumptown.

00:40:03 - Next up, former guest and friend of the show Jane Zelikova updates us on what's been keeping her so busy, and it's a lot:

01:04:03 - PaleoPOWs are a lot like large meetings, it's easy to feel insignificant but people probably still like you. This week we're happy to have a donation from Victor C. who gives us some holiday cheer along with some money. Thanks, Victor!

Thanks for listening, part 2 coming soon!

Yes, it is literally like plugging two things in.

0:02.1

Are you self-congratulating yourself for your ability to plug things in?

0:03.9

I mean, people would hear you making fun of me if you were talking to the mic.

0:07.8

From science sort of.com, you're listening to Science Sort of. Hey there, Paley-A-Possi. It is Ryan here, and this is a little bit different episode.

0:32.4

We haven't done a special edition in a while, but I was fortunate enough to go to the American Geophysical Union's annual

0:39.4

meeting in San Francisco two weeks ago, mid-December, and I was able to go as press. So in

0:45.3

addition to giving a talk on scientific outreach, I also got to talk to other people about their

0:51.1

outreach and about their science. So this is the combination of that.

0:54.7

I'm going to split it into two parts just so it's not too long.

0:57.9

And the theme that kind of emerged not necessarily in a planned way, but just kind of came

1:01.9

out was oceans and outreach.

1:04.0

So each segment here is going to have two interviews that I did with folks at AGU and talking about primarily ocean science, but also about scientific

1:14.8

outreach. So our first episode is going to begin with an interview I did with Martin

1:20.9

Huachar Martinez, who studies ocean fluxes around Antarctica. And then we're going to finish up

1:27.3

this episode with me talking to our old friend,

1:29.6

Jane Zalikova, about some of the really cool outreach and activism work that she's been doing

1:33.5

herself.

1:34.7

And then I'll come back at the end for some quick plugs.

1:37.8

And then I will see you again shortly for part two for more oceans and outreach.

1:42.5

So let's get right into it with my conversation with Martine.

1:46.8

And thanks oddly to the I Fanboy guys,

1:49.4

because I guess Martine was following me on Twitter because of I Fanboy,
