As we await a potential third indictment of Donald Trump, we've got new information

about what was contained in the target letter that the ex-president received earlier this

week.

NBC News can now report that the letter to Trump cites potential violations of three

federal statutes, deprivation of rights under the color of law, tampering with a witness,

and conspiracy to defraud the United States.

You might remember that last charge was one that was recommended against Trump and others

by the January 6th Committee following its year-and-a-half long investigation.

This statute makes it a crime to conspire to defraud the United States, in other words,

to make an agreement to impair, obstruct, or defeat the lawful functions of the United

States government by deceitful or dishonest means.

Now according to a recent report in Rolling Stone, which has not been confirmed by NBC

News, one source seemed to confirm what many were speculating, quote, the statutes listed

in the target letter likely refer to the prosecutor's interest in charging Trump with obstructing

the election certification process, including Trump's efforts to pressure Mike Pence to

stop the certification of President Biden's 2020 victory end quote.

And just today, the special counsel, Jack Smith, was spotted heading to DC to the courthouse

where his same grand jury has been meeting.
