I'm Danny Bessner, here as always with my friend and comrade Derek Davidson,

and we wanted to do a special on the Israeli ceasefire in Lebanon.

So, Derek, what happened?

The Israeli security cabinet voted on Tuesday, Joe Biden then announced it that there will be a ceasefire.

Apparently, Hezbollah has also agreed.

At least that's according to the Lebanese government, which has been mediating with Hezbollah in the process of negotiating this deal.

So everybody seems to be on the same page, at least for now.

They've all accepted a ceasefire proposal that was put on the table by the U.S.,

the contours of which are basically, it's a 60-day window that if everything goes okay

in that 60-day window will then turn into a permanent ceasefire

while permanent until the next time there's a conflict, I guess. But the deal largely sticks to the

contours of something we've talked about in the past, the United Nations Security Council Resolution

1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.

Its terms have never been implemented.

It calls for, and this is what's supposed to happen over the 60-day period, calls for one thing,

one first, obviously, the Israelis to get out of Lebanon.

But for Hezbollah to withdraw its military forces north of the Latani River,

which cuts east-west for part of its course, empties into the Mediterranean a bit north of the

city of Tyre. So it's some distance away from the Israeli border. Assuming, again, assuming that those things go okay and that the Israelis are convinced
