When Robin Gonzales discovered that her sister, Royanne, had early onset dementia,

she decided that for as long as she lived, she'd do whatever it took to ensure Royanne was always safe and always cared for.

But Robin talks about her baby sister with such fondness, such love that it's immediately clear.

This was never so much a decision as it was simply an instinctual knowing.

Robin is the oldest.

She is Royanne's big sister, and she takes her role as protector seriously, because she always has.

Even when her mom's dementia diagnosis came on the heels of Royanne's, and again still, when her only other sister is also diagnosed.

It's not lost on Robin that she is the only woman in her immediate family yet to receive a diagnosis, but Robin will tell you that she has no time to worry about such things.

Robin is the protector.

As Royanne's dementia has progressed, her needs have evolved.

And several years ago, that meant choosing to move her into a long-term care facility.

The family couldn't do everything all on their own anymore. They needed help.

The facility was able to provide the kind of intensive day-to-day care that Royanne needed and deserved.

Before her diagnosis, Royanne loved health and fitness.

She was extremely active in the church. She worked hard, and she saved diligently.
