Summary

Go to www.ottomanlives.com to check out my new show about the people who made the Ottoman Empire run. The Ottoman Empire lasted for six hundred years and dominated the Middle East and Europe, from Budapest to Baghdad and everything in between. The sultans ruled three continents. But they didn't do it on their own. This podcast looks at the cast of characters who made the empire run: the sultan, the queen mother, the peasant, the janissary, the harem eunuch, the holy man, and the outlaw.

They include the Sultan, the concubine, the peasant, the Janissary, the Herim Unic, the

So on the episode about the Sultan for example, you can learn about what it was like to have

0:44.2

four wives, several concubines, and run an empire that goes from Budapest all the way

0:50.1

to Baghdad and how it was really different running the empire from 1300 when you were

0:55.1

essentially a horseback mounted chieftain who led a tribe all the way up to 1900 where

1:00.0

you are a modern Sultan who may have known French, had telegraph networks, and were a few

1:04.9

years away from having an air force.

1:07.6

Then we look at the concubine, what was it like to be captured in his slavery and enter

1:11.5

the Ottoman Empire, enter their Herim, but then slowly work your way up the Herim chain

1:16.1

of command until you could potentially become the wife of a Sultan and even the mother.

1:20.9

And we have these Queen mothers who essentially ran the Empire when Sultans were too incompetent

to do so.
