| 0:07.0 | I'm Gary Jordan and I'll be your host today. |
| 0:09.0 | So in this podcast we bring in the experts, NASA scientists, engineers, and astronauts astronauts all to let you know what's going on right here at NASA. |
| 0:15.0 | So if you're familiar with us, you'll know that we recently just completed a five-part series on the hazards of human spaceflight. |
| 0:22.0 | One of those topics was on radiation. |
| 0:24.1 | And Dr. Zorana Patel gave us a great perspective |
| 0:26.6 | on what's going on and what we're doing |
| 0:28.2 | to learn what happens to the body when exposed |
| 0:31.4 | to space radiation, especially for long periods of time. |

| 0:38.7 | not only to make sure our astronauts are healthy, but to really understand it. |
| 0:42.8 | So Dr. Steve Johnson is one of the senior scientists |
| 0:46.0 | of the Space Radiation Analysis Group. |
| 0:48.2 | It does not only that, but designs hardware, conducts physics modeling |
| 0:51.6 | and 3D modeling, and uses data to plan for future missions. |
| 0:55.8 | But first I wanted to start with Dr Patel, who gives us a nice overview of why studying |
| 1:00.1 | this is so important. So to date there are four health risks from space radiation |
| 1:07.0 | exposure that we identify. The first one is cancer, the risk of radiation inducedinduced carcinogenesis, and that includes epithelial cancers |
| 1:15.6 | and leukemia's. |
| 1:17.3 | And this is actually the biggest contributor to this permissible exposure limit that that's the standard we set for |
| 1:23.7 | our astronauts. The next one is the risk of in-flight and late CNS |
