There's nothing quite like biting into a fresh, crunchy cucumber straight from the plant.

It tastes so much nicer than shop-bought cucumbers, and if you haven't tried to grow cucumbers from seed yet, this

could be the year to do so. Hello, I'm Claire, content creator at the magazine, and I've

been growing cucumbers for a few years, both greenhouse and outdoor varieties, and they're

now a staple on my growing calendar every year. First, clarify if you're going to grow greenhouse

or outside cucumbers and choose the right variety. Greenhouse cucumbers require plenty of heat

and need to be grown in a greenhouse or a polytunnel.

They produce long, smooth fruits like the ones you see in the supermarket, and the plants

can grow quite large. Choose varieties such as the popular Telegraph improved, perfect for slicing

into salads, and Emily for large crops, and a good intolerance to mildew. Outdoor cucumbers can grow in lower

temperatures in a sunny spot outside and produce shorter, fatter fruits that have a tougher,

ridged skin. The plants can either trail and be trained up a support or left to sprawl along the

ground, such as market more for crops of crisp cylindrical

fruits, or the interestingly named Burt plus Tasty Green for high-quality cucumbers, or grow as a
