| 0:26.6 | are three olive-brown muttle eggs. |
| 0:29.6 | A southern lapwing mother carefully covers the clutch |

| 0:35.6 | But this clutch of eggs needs more than just camouflage to evade predators, |
| 0:41.8 | like reptiles on the ground or hawks in the sky. |
| 0:45.9 | If an unfamiliar creature approaches, |
| 0:49.0 | the southern Lapwing parent, usually the male, sounds his alarm. |
| 0:55.5 | He then charges towards his opponent, wings open, and head low, ready to peck with his sharp beak. |

| 1:11.9 | And the lapwing has a secret weapon, sharp red, bony spurs that stick out from the bird's wrists. |
| 1:19.8 | My heart jumped the first time I had to duck to avoid a lapwing's flying attack. |

| 1:29.8 | but the bird thought otherwise. |
| 1:33.8 | This is why humans can never get too close to a southern Lapwing's nest. |
| 1:36.3 | These ferocious defenders simply won't have it. |
