President Cyril Ramaposa has described South Africa's election results as a victory

for its democracy despite his party losing its majority for the first time. The final result gave the party he

leads the ANC 159 seats in the 400 seat parliament. This represents a sharp drop in support and the ANC has

started talks with other parties to form a coalition. The former president

Jacob Zuma did not attend the announcement of the final results on

Sunday and has hinted that he may challenge them. Our Africa correspondent Barbara

Plattasha reports from Johannesburg. Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

good evening and welcome to the ceremony to announce the results of the 2024 national and provincial elections.

The official announcement of results we already knew, the ceremony rubber stamping the decline of the African National Congress.

The President Cyril Ramaposa said the people had spoken, but he made a broader call for

political parties to find common ground in response, apparently preparing the ground for coalition talks.
