Summary

One crime is treated differently than all others, both inside and outside prison. People who commit sex crimes against children are often ostracized, abused by fellow inmates, and deemed beyond rehabilitation. On this episode, we talk to victims and perpetrators about the causes for, and impacts of, these crimes.

0:06.2	because we're in the middle of this pandemic and prisons are being deeply affected by it,
0:10.4	we wanted to talk a little bit about that first.
0:12.9	We asked families of incarcerated people to write us and let us know what's going on.
0:17.3	And here's a bit of what we heard.
0:19.4	Kathleen has a son in a federal prison in Louisiana where four incarcerated people had died
0:23.8	from coronavirus and 17 others have tested positive.
0:27.2	He said she was really worried when she stopped hearing from her son, but she did finally.
0:31.6	He wasn't sick, he'd been quarantined because he had been in touch with one of those people
0:35.6	who tested positive.
0:38.2	She wrote, he said he is not sure when he'll be able to call again and he is tired of
0:43.5	baloney and PB&J sandwiches.

0:47.9	I laughed when I read it because I understand.

0:56.0	This is Amelia whose husband is in Corcoran State Prison in California.
1:00.0	She wrote, I'm scared.
1:02.0	I've got no one to really talk to.
1:03.8	I don't go anywhere during this crisis except work and the grocery store.
