Summary

Truth, whether in men’s work or politics or science, is crucial. Sophie Zhang was fired from Facebook in 2020, and her farewell memo was leaked to Buzzfeed, went viral on Reddit, and revealed (in her words) “multiple blatant attempts by foreign national governments to abuse our platform on vast scales to mislead their own citizenry, and caused international news on multiple occasions". This is just the tip of the iceberg. We dive into what happened, the consequences of doing nothing about it, inauthenticity versus misinformation, and a lot more. This isn’t the usual ManTalks convo, but it’s an important one. Today we have a bit of a different conversation, but an equally interesting one.

I have Sophie Zhang with me today, and we're going to dive deep into how platforms

0:23.8

like Facebook, specifically Facebook, but how social media platforms are being used through fake

0:30.8

engagement to spread manipulation, to spread false messages, and are really being used in a multitude of ways within the political

0:40.7

realm, within the scientific realm, to spread misinformation. So Sophie's going to break down

0:46.2

for us how this actually functions, how it actually works. And she is able to do that because she is a

0:52.9

data scientist and former Facebook employee.

0:55.8

And for the years that she worked at Facebook, she was part of the fake engagement team,

1:00.3

which was assigned to look for ways in which Facebook was being abused.

1:04.7

During her time on the team, she discovered multiple political manipulations

1:08.4

and opposition harassment networks, which is an interesting

1:12.2

concept all into itself, made to look like authentic human accounts operating in 25 different

1:18.2

countries. In her words, there were multiple blatant attempts by foreign national governments

1:23.0

to abuse the platform on vast scales to mislead their own citizens, which caused international news

1:30.0

on multiple occasions. In 2020, after repeated warnings to management about what was going on,

1:36.0

including contacting Facebook Vice President Guy Rosen, she was fired. She was offered a large

1:41.8

severance package but declined since it was attached to a non-disparagement

1:45.3

agreement, restricting her from openly speaking in public about Facebook's issues and the issues

1:52.6

that she discovered.

1:54.4

On her final day, she released a 7,800-word memo on Facebook's internal network detailing

Facebook's failure to combat political manipulation
