You can live your whole life inside the same walls and never really know who else is sharing the space with you. For her,

the realization crept in quietly. Little noises, half-remembered dreams, that thin, prickling feeling

when you know you're not alone, even though you can't explain why. By the time she was 21,

she'd accepted that her home wasn't just hers. She'd moved often as a kid.

But this townhouse was the place she'd stayed the longest. A narrow two-story rental, worn beige

carpet on the stairs, three bedrooms and one bathroom up top, a living room and kitchen downstairs

that always smelled faintly of drier sheets no matter what was cooking.

She lived there with her mom and her older sister, six years her senior, both students too,

all of them pooling their money to make it work. The townhouse looked normal enough from the

outside, identical to the row beside it, but upstairs the air felt heavier somehow.

She couldn't remember a time when it didn't.

Her family wasn't the type to shrug off strange things.

Her mother called her the little witch baby, half a joke, half a label that stuck.

They believed that some people were just open to the other side, thin-skinned in ways

science couldn't measure. Relatives told stories at gatherings the way other families swapped recipes,

comparing notes about footsteps on stairs, flickering lights, whispers that didn't belong to any

living throat. So when the weirdness in the townhouse started, nobody went into denial.

They just learned to live with it.
