Summary
#31. This is another lecture from Cruiser's University that Andy gave in April in Annapolis. Sorry for the not-perfect quality (he recorded it on his phone), but hopefully the content makes up for it! Andy discusses six common problems you might encounter offshore, and how to deal with them. Indeed, whether some of them are even worth losing sleep over! Of the six, only two are what Andy calls 'deal-breakers' - meaning they can ruin, sometimes dangerously, an otherwise pleasant experience ocean sailing. If you missed it, check out Episode 29 about 'Mentally Preparing to go Offshore,' the other lecture from Cruiser's U. Enjoy!

| 0:00.0 | Hey, welcome to 59 degrees north with Andy Shell. Enjoy the show. |
| 0:05.0 | Welcome back to the 59 degrees north sailing podcast. It's Andy Shell here for episode number 31. |
| 0:10.0 | I'm recording this intro in Center City, Philadelphia. I'm walking on my way to a coffee shop |
| 0:15.0 | to kill some time before I catch the train up to Newport. This is about a week old since I recorded this. It'll come out on sometime June 20 something. It's June 18th as I record this. The reason I'm waiting at the train station is because Mia forgot her passport back in Annapolis, or back in Lancaster, not Annapolis, back in Lancaster. So she's on the train back to Lancaster to get her passport and her green card because, yes, the race goes to a foreign country. |
| 0:59.0 | So well done, Mia. You're forgiven. I still love you. Oddly enough, today, June 18th, when I'm recording this, is our three-year anniversary. So a great anniversary that we're having together, but it's all in fun. Anyway, I want to thank our returning sponsor, Weems and Plath. Weems and Plath has been around making quality, traditional navigation equipment for over 85 years. I just got a new compass, a C. Plath Merker Compass, it's called. |
| 1:04.0 | Best compass in the world, best money you can buy for a pleasure boat. |
| 1:07.0 | It's got a 50-year warranty. It comes in a wooden case. It is phenomenal. I am very |
| 1:12.3 | excited to take it to Sweden with me this summer to put it on Arcturists. So check them out at |
| 1:18.1 | Weems-plath.com. Use the promo code 59 North. That's 5-9 North with a capital N, and you get a big |
| 1:24.0 | discount on your checkout. So that's 59 North, no spaces, capital N, on weems-plath.com. |
| 1:30.1 | So thanks again to Williams and Plath. |
| 1:32.2 | Episode number 31, this is another lecture from the Cruiser's University in Annapolis I did back in April. |
| 1:38.7 | This one is on problem solving, yeah, problem solving offshore, solving problems offshore, however you want to say it, |
| 1:44.8 | and kind of what you need to worry about and what you don't need to worry about. |
| 1:48.8 | So we talk about six common problems that happen offshore, only two of which are sort of |
| 1:53.7 | what I call deal breakers that can end your trip. So listen for that. |
| 1:59.1 | Apologies for the quality. |
| 2:01.2 | I recorded this on my phone because my Zoom recorder was out of battery, |
| 2:05.1 | so it's a little less good quality-wise than the mentally preparing to go offshore one. |
| 2:11.2 | But I hope the content makes up for it. |
| 2:13.2 | As usually, you can find me on Facebook, Andy Shell, or 59 North, |
| 2:18.0 | and as well on Twitter at 59 North Sailing, |
